The Jalabandhu are an initiative spearheaded by Water For People–India in response to challenges we saw from our monitoring program that suggested... that routine maintenance and minor/major repairs of handpumps were not effective when managed by local water committees. The Jalabandhu are a private sector, mobile mechanic response to this programmatic weakness. I have seen the Jalabandhu get stronger each year since they were started in 2009. I think there are also additional challenges they...moreless

This is a terrific story! As we scale the Jalabandhu program up, would Mr. Jana be willing to train other entreprenuers on how to grow their business? Could/would we pay him for this type of training?

I second Caitlin's question (great question!)... is his teaching at night in regards to his day job or completely different? Would he be... willing/interested to train other entreprenuers, for pay of course?moreless

Yep...this is the way it happens and many of these people in these developing countries have incredible skills. We can celebrate their skills and... help them to learn how to use those skills to help others and provide for their families. 4 teams with ICDI in Central African Republic keeping 1300 villages in clean water. Those are talented Central Africans.moreless

Great simple video, clear message, good example of how we can produce learning videos without a lot of technical input.

Share this video with others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnNPgtx7mdYI am a big fan of microfinance, having started my first microfinance project for water and sanitation in rural KwaZulu, Natal, South Africa in 1993. ... But I learned very quickly in this project that there was often a gap between repayment rates and actual impact. The microfinance sector spends a great deal of time focused on repayment rates – with organizations suggesting that they are successful and impactful because...moreless

Water For People and Akvo are in discussions regarding Field Level Operations Watch (FLOW), a leading data collection platform created by Water For... People. The collaboration will enhance FLOW's ability to support global monitoring in water and sanitation, and create opportunities for it to support other development categories. The combined strengths of the two organizations will accelerate advocacy, funding, licensing, and training. Discussions center on the future development of FLOW as an...moreless

FLOW has a lot of potential with other development areas, is very flexible... Congratulations, good way to increase the information access.

There is tremendous demand from the sector players to know more above FLOW and its application. I am sure Akvo partnership will help us to strengthen our FLOW platform to reach wide and far.

Two months ago, I stood at a water pump in Uganda. The construction is spectacular. The engineering is beautiful. It’s installed perfectly. And it... will fail shortly. The reason is simple – tariffs are not being paid and if finances are not in place then pumps will break, as so many do worldwide. This is "The Naked Truth", the first in a series of videos that expose the truth about project implementation. Sustainability is an easy word to say, but it is hard to achieve in the field. We ask...moreless

Everyone means Everyone! The politically connected and the politically marginalized. The economically secure and economically insecure and vulnerable.... Those who regularly scout out international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for support and those who do not see a route to NGO support. Those who live near the main roads where development support is generally significant worldwide, and those, like this family, that live on the top of a Bolivian mountain, off the main road. Everyone! moreless

I love this video on Chinda, a small Municipality in Honduras that has achieved full water coverage. It tells the tale of achieving what no other... municipality in Honduras (or Central America, or Africa…) has achieved – a situation where every household, every school and every clinic has access to an improved waster source today. Unfortunately, Chinda should not stand alone in this achievement, and we are driving towards similar examples of Everyone in districts and municipalities across Latin...moreless

Water For People launched our innovative monitoring tool, Field Level Operations Watch (FLOW), at PopTech almost a year ago. Since then, we have seen... FLOW not only contribute significantly to our understanding of the impact of our water and sanitation programs within Water For People, but also begin to be utilized by a few organizations to great effect.FLOW has been applied nationwide in Liberia and is currently being rolled out in Ghana. FLOW is being used by a number of small non-profits in...moreless
